What Cursor is

Cursor is an AI-first code editor built as a fork of VS Code. That single design choice explains most of its appeal: you keep the extensions, keybindings, themes, and muscle memory you already have, and Cursor layers AI over the top of them rather than asking you to learn a new tool. The AI is not a sidebar you occasionally consult — it is woven through the editor as predictive multi-line edits, a chat that has read your whole repository, and an agent that can plan and apply changes across many files at once.

Where it earns its score

The standout is how well the AI understands the project you are actually in. Ask a question and Cursor answers with your files, your types, and your conventions in view, not a generic snippet. Tab completion predicts the next edit you were going to make — often several lines, sometimes in a different file — and it is the feature developers say they miss most the moment they switch back to a plain editor. Agent mode takes this further, carrying out a described task across the codebase while you supervise, which is where the time savings become real rather than novelty.

Because it is VS Code underneath, there is no adoption tax. Teams can move in an afternoon, keep their existing setup, and layer on MCP servers, rules, and hooks to shape how the AI behaves. For a company standardizing on one AI editor, that combination of familiarity and control matters as much as raw model quality.

The catch

Cursor assumes you can read and steer code. It accelerates a developer; it does not replace one. If you can't tell when the agent has gone wrong, you can't use it safely — the tool amplifies judgment you already have rather than supplying it. The other honest caveat is cost: the base subscription is flat, but the heaviest frontier models run on usage-based billing, so a heavy day of agent work can cost more than the sticker price implies. Budget for it, or cap it.

Cursor makes a good developer faster. It does not make a non-developer into one — that is a different tool, and a different review.

Who it's for — and who it isn't

Use Cursor if you write software and want the AI at the center of your editor instead of off to the side. It is, for our money, the strongest tool in its category for that reader. But DaddyPromoos's core audience is founders and builders shipping products, many of whom don't write code — and for them Cursor is the wrong starting point. If you want to go from an idea to a deployed, working app without opening a repository, an AI app builder like Lovable will get you there; Cursor is where you'd graduate once you (or an engineer you hire) own the code.

Pricing, honestly

There is a free Hobby plan with limited Agent requests and Tab completions — genuinely enough to judge whether the workflow clicks for you. Pro is $16/month for extended limits, frontier-model access, and cloud agents, with the strongest models metered on usage. Teams is $32/user/month adding central billing, SSO, and agentic code review. All figures verified on the official pricing page in July 2026; confirm at checkout, since usage-based tools adjust often.
