Grammarly is worth it, but not for the reason you think

Most people buy Grammarly to fix typos. The typo fixing is free. What you actually pay for is something quieter and more valuable.

Grammarly has a reputation as a spell checker with a subscription, and if that were all it did, the free tier would be enough for almost everyone. The catch is that the free tier already handles the typos. What you pay for is a different thing entirely.

The free tier is genuinely good

Spelling, basic grammar, and obvious punctuation slips are all caught without paying a penny. If your only worry is the occasional mistake in an email, you may never need more than the free plan, and we would rather tell you that than sell you an upgrade.

What the paid plan actually buys

  • Tone. It flags when a message reads as colder or sharper than you meant, which is worth more than any comma fix.

  • Clarity. It spots the tangled sentence you stopped being able to see after the third rewrite.

  • Consistency. Across a team, it keeps the writing sounding like one company rather than ten different people.

Where it does not belong

Grammarly is a polisher, not a writer. It will not give you ideas or structure, and leaning on it to generate content is asking a proofreader to do an author's job. Pair it with a real drafting tool if that is what you need.

Buy Grammarly for the tone check, not the typo check. The typos were always free.

Verdict

For anyone who writes to other people for a living, the paid plan quietly earns its keep. For everyone else, the free tier is already most of the value.
